Photo Friday: San Francisco

Our final stop in the US of A before heading to Asia was the land of fog and fabulousness, San Francisco.  Two relatively short road journeys, from the Metzger Farm in San Andreas to Sacramento, and Sacramento on to SF, and we were ready for three days of sightseeing.

The “City by the Bay” is home to some world famous landmarks, so we were excited to get the camera out ready to capture some of them.  In line with recent trends….”gotta catch em all” (sorry, couldn’t resist).

Lombard Street is known as the crookedest street in the world, with 8 hairpin turns.  It has appeared in Hollywood movies and is a hotspot for tourists with cameras.

The Twin Peaks are two hills which tower above city at 925m.  The route up is a very steep walk but worth it for the view. We learnt the hard way to only attempt it on a bike if you’re the kind of person that has a wardrobe full of fluorescent lycra!

Another of the city’s famous attractions is the Sea Lions at Pier 39, located in the Fisherman’s Wharf.  As you can see, there unfortunately weren’t many around when we visited. It turns out its because it was mating season and they were in warmer waters at breeding grounds.

Recognise these?  They are known as the ‘Painted Ladies’, an American term used to describe victorian houses painted in more than three colours.  Beautiful!

And finally…No visit to San Fran would be complete without seeing the most famous landmark, the Golden Gate bridge.  We cycled across it which was great fun if a bit windy!

Have you been to San Francisco before?  What sights did you see? Is there anything you think we missed? Get in touch in the comments in below, we would love to hear from you!

      Hi Jennifer.
Glad you enjoyed the photos. We weren’t really there long enough to get an appreciation for the place, just a whistle stop sight-seeing tour.

We would love to join the PhotoFriday link up. Thanks for the invite!

You need to come back. There are a lot more things to see. A bunch that are not in the travel guides.

I was born in San Francisco, lived basically my whole life in the Bay Area and an educator for SFUSD.

      Hi Patrick
Glad you found our blog post. Unfortunately we only had a couple of days in SF so we wanted to make sure we saw all the “big sights” whilst we were there. We missed out on seeing Alcatraz and we have plans to come back to California, so who knows maybe we will come back and explore. We’ll be sure to ask you for some tips!

San Francisco is such a great city! I have not been there in a long time and there are so many places I have not checked out. Thanks for reminding me about the city thru your photos.

      Hi Ruth
Glad you enjoyed looking at the photos, we certainly enjoyed taking them! The wind and the hills were a bit overwhelming, but as we missed out on Alcatraz we may just have to go back one day!
